Depression is a symptom or an illness that everyone inevitably goes through. Although for some, it may be temporary; others are not as fortunate. Studies have been made to determine what causes depression, but one thing can be said – depression has no single cause. It usually comes from a series of stress-related events or situations that build up.
Some may consider depression simply as a state of mind however, studies have shown us that there are factors which triggers and influence the brain activity to cause an imbalance.
One of the factors to be considered is trauma or stress. Financial issues, work-related stress, a recent break-up, an unfortunate accident, or death of a loved one are things to be considered. Some studies have also shown that an abrupt change of life – like getting married or graduating can also be a cause of depression.
For some people, genetics can be a cause for this ailment. Though this does not occur often, those who experience depression because of genetics have a family history of mental illnesses. Others go through a series of anxiety disorder, lack of sleep, eating disorder, or even schizophrenia.
Another common cause for depression is a person’s physical condition. Those who are suffering from serious medical illness go through depression as a symptom for their condition. Part of it may be due to a low self-esteem that is triggered by the weakness they are feeling. Nutrition deficiencies also play a role in the imbalance that may result in a depressed feeling.
Those are experiencing depression, whether they are aware of it or not, some feeling of self-worth is lost. People who suffer with this condition often go to drugs and alcohol to find temporary relief or distraction. And although they might find pleasure in these indulgences, the abuse of drugs and alcohol can sometimes even aggravate the situation. Professional help and support from loved ones are always the best cure for any situation.
