Seasonal Depression

Have you ever felt low in the season where everyone seems to feel uplifted? It is somewhat common for people to feel a shift in mood whenever there is change. For others, they feel a little weaker, lose a little interest in their surroundings, and may crave a bit more ‘alone time’. This is a mood disorder that is commonly referred to as Seasonal Affective Disorder (or Seasonal Depression).

Most people experience this type of condition in the winter that is why others call it the winter blues or the winter depression, although this can also occur – but very seldom – during summer, spring, or autumn.

Symptoms of this type of depression includes tendency to oversleep, has increased cravings for sweets or starchy food, a tendency to over-eat, difficulty waking up in the morning, lack of energy and concentration, pessimism, inability to complete tasks, and withdrawal from friends or family. Those who experience this disorder have a normal mental health through most of the year and exhibit a serious change in mood on specific seasons every year.

Some studies have suggested that this type of disorder may be related to light (or sunlight). A theory suggested that the decrease of exposure to sunlight can affect a person’s mood, sleep, and can cause a change in hormones.

In some cases of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), anti-depressants is enough for treatment. However, studies have shown that a prolonged exposure to sunlight is an effective treatment. Another option would be light therapy – which is often called phototherapy. Although there can be minor side effects when light therapy is used for treatment.

Staying outdoors with friends and family during the day is always a good medicine for any type of depression. Laugh a little, have fun together, and keep each other healthy is the key to having a long and happy life.
