Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the body produces a specialized type of white blood cell (lymphocyte) which attacks the thyroid gland. This results in an inflammatory response to the thyroid gland.
The symptoms of Hashimoto’s disease are varied. A swollen thyroid gland, otherwise known as a goiter, is very common with Hashimoto’s. The thyroid will enlarge in size as the disease process impairs its function. The most common complaint people have is fullness in the throat area.
Initially, patients may feel signs of too much thyroid hormone-hyperthyroidism. Symptoms include racing of the heart, nervousness. etc. this is due to an inflammation of the thyroid gland, causing the gland to release much of its stored thyroid hormone.
After a period of time, and after the thyroid gland essentially ‘burns’ itself out, the hyperthyroid symptoms will give way to hypothyroid symptoms, such as fatigue, coldness, etc.
it is common for blood test to show elevated levels of thyroid antibodies in those who suffer from Hashimoto’s. These antibodies
- Antithyroid Antibodies
- Antimicrosomal Antibodies
Hashimoto”s disease can affect people of all ages. It has its most common incidence among women in their thirties and forties. up to two percent of the population may suffer from Hashimoto’s.
Hashimoto’s disease is also associated with other autoimmune illnesses.
